Born and raised in Ouchijuku, I longed for the big city, and after graduating from high school I worked in the food and beverage industry in Miyagi Prefecture. Since then I have loved talking with people and was able to gain a lot of experience and learning. Upon turning 30, feeling that as the eldest son of the 11th generation I had to take over the family home, I returned to Ouchi. There, I again keenly felt the charm of this thatched-roof village and the importance of passing down its preservation techniques. Wanting to ensure that we, too, carry on the village our predecessors have protected for generations, I am currently studying roof-thatching as well. I still have so much I don't understand, but...
Ouchijuku has maintained its community rules under an independent administrative district completely separate from the town. As one resident of Ouchi, I belong to organizations such as the administrative district, the tourism association, the preservation society, the youth association, the fire brigade, and the 結いの会. So that this village can be a place of solace for many people, we residents continue to learn together, following the example of Shirakawa Village in Gifu Prefecture, about landscape preservation and the like. Going forward, we hope to keep taking on various challenges so that this will remain a community where our children can say, 'I'm glad I was born here.'
